Dear Walt, this is becoming prime "mock draft season." And while you have gone the extra mile by including 4 full rounds, I really wish you'd explain why the players are deserving of their draft slots, instead of solely focusing on team needs. It seems like your M.O. to explain for a few sentences why the team would pick a certain position. Then only explain in a sentence or two why the player is worth of said selection. Maybe in Round 4 that'd be acceptable, but for the Top 10-15 picks really should have in depth analysis of the player. That's just my 2 cents. Take care.

@jsemmens I've been to the Big Board in the past, but it's still an inefficient way of going about a mock. Not to mention, reports and the people writing them change, no? I come to Walt's site because I used to like his insight on every player. Now, it's simply team needs and a very limited amount of actual analysis. You definitely need SOME amount of explanation behind a pick with regards to team need, but you need much more of the player evaluation angle. Any dummy can write why a particular team "needs" a specific position; it takes a pretty good eye to understand what player needs to fill it. Again, just my 2 cents.

"There's talk that Cleveland will take Mitch Trubisky with the No. 1 overall pick."

Where do you people come up with this stuff? It was reported that the Browns scouted Trubisky during the season but nothing has been said about if they even like him let alone drafting him at #1

"Terrelle Pryor and Josh Gordon both have expiring contracts this March. Retaining one of them will be key, and if it's the latter, the Browns better hope that he stays out of trouble."

Josh Gordon has barely played in 3 years, is still suspended by the league and the Browns have said they have moved on from him so I doubt he is re-signed. The Browns and Pryor are said to be working on a new deal and even if that doesn't happen he will probably be franchise tagged. Also the Browns have last years 1st rnd pick in Corey Coleman who missed about half the year due to injury so unless the Browns are absolutely wowed by Williams I don't see him being the pick.

@dawg66 I see where you're coming from. I really do. But I'm sure as a Browns fan you can understand, they have needs EVERYWHERE. You aren't gonna win a super bowl unless you have a QB. Case in point pretty much every super bowl winning quarterback ever. Second, yes you have Terrelle Pryor and Corey Coleman. Terrelle Pryor is a slot receiver which is gonna get you nowhere unless you play for New England. Corey Coleman has yet to prove a damn thing. Mike Williams, however, just took down Alabama pretty much BY HIMSELF. It's the right range for him and I'm positive Huge Jackson wouldn't pass over him at this point, meaning pre-combine and interviews.

For PIT CB 2 years in a row I can understand, but IDK if they would do it 3 years in a row. By then they should be looking for Ben's heir or replacing people in contract years. (DE, ILB, OLB, RB)

@DawgPound4Lyfe  Mccaffrey is a third down back....Raiders have two of them. What they need is an early down/short yardage back. Furthermore, NO WAY their GM takes a rb in the first round. Raiders biggest need is an ILB, or a penettating DT.

the fact that you have Reuben Foster at #27 on your big board is a slant on your board not the Niners. Every other reputable scout has Foster ranked very highly.

I can tell you without thinking, Matt Kalil will not sign with the worst football team in the NFL, nor would he go to play right tackle

@kkunert327 Vikings for sure would like to have him back, they know they would have to get something, Kalil doesn't need a 1 yr show me deal, also he still wouldn't go to a team to play RT instead of LT unless he was on a super bowl caliber team

@kkunert327

I don't like the thought process of Jimmy for any first rounder, this year or next.

If Jimmy struggles, then we are stuck resigning him because we are unable to draft a QB next year, without a 1st.

We have 5 picks in the first 4 rounds, I would like to see us address the secondary, our offensive tackles, and tight end.

With one of our 4ths, I would be perfectly content taking Webb, Kaaya, or Peterman, as I have the same amount of faith in them as I do in Jimmy.  It also gives us more time to potentially develop them, and more contract control.  Relying on Jimmy is simply a leap of faith, and I would rather take the logical approach.

If the young QB we draft does not show promise, the 2018 class seems to have several potential strong candidates.  It may sound pessimistic, but I am willing to forgo the possibility of a successful 2017 if I helps us establish long term success.

Ok draft  I gave you a minimum grade C- for doing three rounds... Not sure but you have a couple players drafted that have said they are returning to school.. R. Freeman & C. Sutton..

Browns won`t go for that trade... Kessler might be just as good as JG.... He`s actually played more games ...

You don't know any of the quarterbacks in this draft are going to be good or bad.  Every year "its a weak QB class."  Sooner or later you have to stop beating around the bush and invest a high pick.  Smart teams draft quarterbacks frequently and develop their guy.

The Chiefs have 6 mil in cap space now.  Cutting Foles opens up 10 mil, cutting Charles another 7.  23 million with pockets of other potential cap space to open up means they have enough room to comfortably keep Eric Berry long term, sign another guy or two, and get a full draft class in.

Berry in any other uni than a Chiefs uni in 2017 isn't happening.  Tony Jefferson has a better chance to slip through the cracks as Chandler Jones is Arizona's #1 priority.

17 mil a year is an awful lot to pay to a WR.  That's near Megatron money, and more money than Julio, Dez, and Demaryius all make.  Jeffery ain't worth that.

Brian Hoyer sucks.  I don't want to see him in a bears uni.  Barkley either.

@jaded bears fan Then again what quarterback are you going to get? Are you willing to draft Trubisky or Watson and start them right away? I do agree they need to draft someone, but I would rather keep a low cost Barkley and a developmental type in the 2nd or 3rd round to groom and take over.

I do realize Berry is a pipe dream, but at the moment he is still a possibility until he signs or gets a franchise tag in this scenario. If not yeah a Tony Jefferson is okay or a Jonathan Cyprien.

Pretty bad all the way around, and last year you were not even close!!! Hooker, then Watt.....C'mon man.  I hate the pick of a WR, but I bet TT grabs Davis or Williams at #7.  I would rather someone Like McDowell, Solomon or Allen, but doubt he will pull the trigger.  Bolles and Robinson played better than Ramczyk at OT.

Jerry, is that you?

A first round for an unproven QB is the same impatient philosophy that got us in this mess. Don't force a maneuver of this magnitude.

@HurricaneDitka I would prefer giving up maybe this years 2nd and next, but thanks to this bad quarterback draft they will probably want more. Hoping the Bears aren't as bad next year the 1st round pick would hopefully be in the teens so it won't be as great as this years 3rd overall pick.

I don't like gambling on him seeing as how you're right that he is still unproven, but he is more ready to play than say a Mitch Trubisky or Deshaun Watson.

I think the Browns are moving in the right direction... C. Coleman was playing well before he broke his hand....didn`t help he needs to work on catching the ball better anyways but he looked really quick on the field... RG3 got hurt again...much like T. Romo...but being its the Browns people got on them for an injury like all teams have....  I. Crowell & D. Johnson make a decent RB tandem but they should draft one this year... Really like S. Perine & C. Samual this year... Teams will sign & let go guys and hindsight being 20/20 they see where they missed... Gabriel found a nitch in ATL .... I think they should have held on to T. Benjamin....resigning o-line has hurt them the most... one  team offers more money the player is gone.... not sure if ANY team can re-sign all their top players...  I still find it funny that last year people said Wentz and Goff wern`t worth trading up for because 2017 had better QB prospects and now people are saying wait till 2018.... C. Wentz looked just ok to me... J.Goff looked horrible.. P. Lynch looked lost as well... D. Prescott was better than both in college but had a summer DUI drop him down boards like a rock...  IF I WERE THE BROWNS I`d draft like this ....Did one trade with the Redskins...they have a ton of picks this year & I think they will be busy in 2017

Round 1 Pick 1: Myles Garrett, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
Round 1 Pick 17 (WASH): Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
Round 2 Pick 1: Haason Reddick, OLB, Temple
Round 2 Pick 17 (WASH): Marcus Williams, FS, Utah
Round 2 Pick 20: Roderick Johnson, OT, Florida State
Round 3 Pick 1: Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
Round 3 Pick 17 (WASH): Zay Jones, WR, East Carolina
Round 4 Pick 1: Kyle Fuller, C, Baylor
Round 4 Pick 36 (COMP): Kareem Hunt, RB, Toledo
Round 5 Pick 1: Taywan Taylor, WR, Western Kentucky
Round 5 Pick 31: Ejuan Price, OLB, Pittsburgh
Round 5 Pick 34 (COMP): Jeremy Sprinkle, TE, Arkansas
Round 6 Pick 1: Jayon Brown, ILB, UCLA

@kklunert   I agree Wentz is better than Kessler at this point ( not by alot to be honest )  Once teams got tape on him he regressed ALOT ...  His arm and game savvy is good but he looked average at best... I watched D. Prescott all thru his sr  year in college and thought he was a better QB but he made a bad choice getting a DUI...  You are 110% right on them having to hit on their draft picks... Titans hit with J. Conklin when many said they reached big time for him...sometimes you get lucky but I thought he was just as good as Tunsil & Stanley ...

Round 1 Pick 17 (WASH): Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State

@weekend warrior Can't deny Wentz is better than what they have now, but they did land a lot of picks they just need to hit with them.

I just see no reason in predicting trades it's just me. It's hard to know what they'll give up and with who. If you enjoy doing it go for it I guess. LOL.

Reddick should be staying at OLB in a 4-3 front or I guess inside on a 3-4, but I don't think he is big enough. Plus, Kirksey played well for them so I don't think it's a huge need. Zay Jones most likely gets taken earlier in the 2nd round or so and if they keep Pryor I don't see it as a big need.

A first round for an unproven QB is the same impatient philosophy that got us in this mess. Don't force a maneuver of this magnitude.

I was more referring to you suggesting of the use of next years first round pick for a Jimmy trade.  I should have been more clear.

We should learn from the Cubs and Sox, and not try and act like this is something that can be turned around with a QB. Especially an entirely unproven one.

I like Jimmy, but the price is too high.

@weekend warrior Yeah like I don't think they are that far off like people think. To me you could always upgrade the line and make it better. Besides Thomas and Bitonio the rest are meh in my opinion. Maybe, Coleman turns out to be good, but you can never have too many good blockers in my mind.

@HurricaneDitka I didn't say they should draft a quarterback in the first round, but it is a possibility if they think one of the options is worthy of it. I don't think Pace is stupid enough to force the issue like that though.

Aren't you forgetting about Telvin Smith, one of the best young linebackers in  the league?? Not only that, Myles Jack can easily slide into the MLB role, while  Dante Fowler/ or Yannick Ngakoue rushes from the strongside LB spot. Sorry  but, LB is definitely not a major need for this squad. Nice try though smh

@Grmc375 Paul Poszlunszy is easily replaceable in my opinion. I read some where that the Jags were staying in the 4-3 so I think Ngakoue and Fowler are staying at the traditional end spot, I could be wrong though. I like Smith, but he is undersized and gets nicked up a lot so I would rather find a better option. So, it would Reddick, Jack, and Smith which can become one of the best linebacking corps in the league.

Hawks are the more talented team. Break was a good reset for both teams. I think the Heat will cool off and Hawks will be better...Home game 3.5 inst too much to lay, even w/o Schroder

T-wolves have talent but haven't learned to finish games, teams about equal I would rather have the points and veteran presence...Home game doesn't mean much in Min.

I agree 110%   the Browns also have Shon Coleman coming back from injury so I hope that helps them in the trenches... I think they lose players because they grow very tired of losing.... money can only get players to stay sometimes....  Watching them last year I think showed promise...they lost at least 3 games they very well could have won... losing a 20-0 lead against the Ravens was brutal....

You are correct the Browns were ranked 16th in 2016 by PFF. I understand why considering that other teams have bad o lines. Also the Browns do have Thomas, Bitonio and Greco who are good players. The big problem is Cam Erving who can't block. Pasztor also needs to be upgraded. Most of the top 10 o line teams were in playoff contention and had good seasons. The Browns let Mack and Schwartz walk but should have brought them back. It would be nice to see the Browns invest in o line play like other teams have done and this will also help whoever their QB is a lot.

For today: CBB:  Monmouth minus a half,  Akron +10,  Cali -10.  NBA: I would have loved to have closed out my teaser today from yesterday,  but in my higher wagered teasers, there are certain criteria that must be met and regretfully none of the games today fit the bill.  However,  I do  Like  some,  so: Start up teaser with:  Wash at Pick,  Boston +12,  Thunder -2.  Another:  Denver -2,  two open,  both of these teasers wagered at  the regular rate.  NHL: Closing both of my ongoing pars from yesterday with the Under 5.5 -140 in the EDM/CAPS game,  hedging for 37 percent on the comeback (Over 5.5 +120.)  In another ongoing par, going in the second tier spot today will be the Caps -200,  small hedge on the comeback (Edmonton +170.)  Good luck to all tonight.

Decent points but many times teams will lose a player becuase the money is the same but they want to move to another team... I can see why players grow tired of being on a losing team...  On that draft example many have Reddick playing  ILB   people keep saying they think he`ll move inside...not sure if he will... trading always happens so I can see the Browns trading the # 12 pick to move down to # 17 ....  They still need more WR depth... If Pryor can be re-signed then maybe they draft Zay Jones only...  The o-line rankings will move around some but I`m still surprised to see the Saints & Browns were ranked where they were in 2016...  I`m hoping we see the Browns improve like the Titans have over the last 2 years.... With this draft I can see them getting two all pros players ( Garrett & Lattimore ) and 4 additional solid starters... My good friend is a Cleveland native so I`m always pulling for his tean except when they play my Vikings....

My understanding is that Tyrod Taylor is an unrestricted free agent.  Why would the Browns give up a draft pick (even swapping places) for him?

@dawg66 That's true. However, I have a hard time believing that he doesn't actually feel that way, as Texas people usually are VERY much in love with the Cowboys AND Ezekiel Elliott said the same thing multiple times last year (about wanting to play in Dallas) and he got his wish and performed great. I feel like the retraction by Garrett was something he was made to do by his agent so that he could be more political. He stands to lose a lot of money if he's not the number 1 pick and I don't see Dallas and Cleveland doing a trade.

@Rcjames253

The Dallas video was made back in early December and Garrett has since come out and said it was a gag and that he would have no problem playing in Cleveland if they selected him.

Tyrod Taylor is under contact with Bills but their is speculation that they are not thrilled with him and he is due a HUGE bonus in March, something like $27 million, so he may be cut at which time the Browns maybe interested.

Dallas taking PEPPERS? HE can't tackle! They have said he will make a better running back than safety or linebacker. Dallas will not take him.

My understanding is that Tyrod Taylor is an unrestricted free agent.  Why would the Browns give up a draft pick (even swapping places) for him?

@brownsfan1 Great question! I'm basing this on reports by nfl.com that relations have "warmed" between Taylor and the Bills. I think the Bills would be better off signing Taylor and using him as trade bait than just tossing him away. Kinda reminds me of the situation with the Eagles and Sam Bradford last year. What are your thoughts?

Seattle's going CB in the first. An argument can be made they'll take OL but since its not a deep draft at OL especially tackle which is what seattle needs, top three guys will be off the board. They need a CB opposite Sherman. Worst run in the Carroll era came during the Williams experiment. Its the most important position on the defense given that it sees the majority of the passes. With Shead injured, if Jones is still on the board they'll bull rush the podium to make that pick. If one of the top 3 OL is still available i can see them taking him and then hoping King is still around in the 2nd

The Patriots would never trade Gronk and if so they wouldn't need to throw in Garoppolo and the 32nd pickjust for the 49ers 2nd pick.

@weekend warrior I know it's hard to keep all of your good players due to cap crunch. However, the Browns have a massive amount of cap room to at least have kept Alex Mack and Mitchell Schwartz who were two good linemen. I don't think they even made an offer to the two.

Plus, I think most people thought the Browns should have stayed and selected Carson Wentz who was clearly a good quarterback prospect. They did draft Kessler last year, but severely over drafted him and he is just not a good fit for Cleveland. He is a small armed quarterback playing in frigid cold temps after playing in California.

Also, why do people who make mocks want to force trades into it? It's already hard enough to determine who goes where, but throwing in a trade that most likely won't happen to me is a waste of time. Also, why do you have them selecting 3 outside linebackers it's not an area of need besides drafting Garrett number 1 they really don't need any others. Same can be said for receivers after drafting a bunch last year.

Almost another perfect picking day across sports yesterday. CBB:  I go 2-0 in teaser play.  NBA:  I get the first two spots of my teaser play last night, thank you  Cavs -2  and Warriors -4. NHL: I get both of my second tier selections to come in,  giving me Two win win Pars for today,  thank you  Blackhawks. I did lose a start up par choice with the Over 6,  in the NYR/TOR game, although there were 64 combined shots on goal,  the game went to a shootout and the final score was 2 to 1.....Argg.  Congrats to winners and back later with some plays for today.

Points I like are resigning Collins, Pryor, and drafting Garrett but other than that the post is lacking.

No way the Browns get a first or second rd pick for Haden. His contract is too much and can't stay healthy. Look at what the Titans gave up for DeMarco Murray last offseason who can still play.

Signing a low end QB is a terrible Browns like move. They keep doing this and has got them nowhere. Ex. RG3, McCown, etc.

I doubt Fournette gets to 12 but even if he did the o line is not good enough to block for him. I'd rather see them draft a CB at 12 as there should be a good one there.

I don't think it's a good idea to draft a QB high in the 2nd rd and then draft another in the first next yr when we don't even know who will be highly rated yet as QBs move up and down draft boards before the yr all the time. They should get one this year while they have 2 firsts and 2 seconds.

No Trubisky please. Next year's quarterback class is so much better. Pick Johnathan Allen, sign a few defensive veterans, and already that defense looks so much better as long as Bowman is healthy.

Offensively, they need help everywhere except at OT and RB. Sign a veteran guard, sign some actual receiving talent, and either sign a stopgap to draft a stud QB next year, or trade for Jimmy G (Cousin's asking price is too high and this team isn't built to win now).

And above all else, SPEND SOME FRICKING MONEY IN FA. WTF was Trent Baalke thinking when he signed 0 impact players with like $50 million in cap space?? So glad he's gone.

@PrinceKO000 That's why I put go after guys like Garcon, Britt, and Logan.  They may not be break the bank studs, but they're good young players who should not command a lot of money.

More thought out than the last one, but a couple things.

1)  Eric Berry isn't walking from KC.  They're declining Nick Foles' contract and opening up cap space to resign him.  They'll cut Jamaal Charles and open up more space to comfortably keep him.

2)  Brian Hoyer sucks, I almost cant believe fans want him back.  The guy who wrote off a wide open Alshon Jeffery in a critical moment against Indy in the 4th quarter before the snap because he assumed the safety would just be over the top.  Never looked once as Jeffery dwarfed poor 4th stringer Patrick Robinson.

There's a reason he was on his 5th team in 6 years, and it wasn't because he's unlucky......its because he's not good.  Houston thought Brock Osweiler was a better option, as did Arizona with Carson Palmer, Cleveland with Manziel, and New England with Ryan Mallett backing up Tom Brady.

And on top of that, the bears cant go into 2017 season with no young quarterback on the roster.  So commit to your plan of Jimmy or drafting a kid.

3)  Matt Barkley sucks too.  As soon as teams figured out to take away the middle of the field from him because that's his comfort zone, be became ineffective pretty quick.

4)  Garapollo doesn't come here without 2 2nd rounders or the 3rd overall pick.  And if the bears are dumb enough to pay that for 1.5 games of production against Miami before they started to figure it out and a bad, underachieving Arizona team--they deserve to be bad for another decade.

5)  The bears need 2 tackles.

6)  I like Bouye and Gilmore, but its not enough, they need 2 CBs and 2 safeties.

7)  Also probably going to need 2-3 WRs when Jeffery walks.

@jaded bears fan So, you suggest they draft a bad quarterback with a coach who can't develop young quarterbacks? I am not huge fan of Hoyer or Barkley either, but they are the best we have unless we keep Cutler.

Good starting tackles are not growing on trees and I actually like Leno he has developed each year in the league as a former 7th rounder so I would not give up on him. Massie is different I would be fine passing on him, but he did perform better down the stretch if you look at the PFF stats.

I know Berry is a long shot, but if he is out there go for him. I doubt they get both Bouye and Gilmore they probably get one. Then roll with that and give Kyle Fuller one more shot he was a former first rounder who showed promise and Deiondre Hall has promise if he can stay healthy to be a good outside corner.

Garoppolo will probably cost a couple 2nd rounders, but I was just highlighting how they should avoid giving up their 3rd overall pick. He is the best option out there even with his limited game tape, but the Bears have seen him in person in practice and know him slightly better than the other teams in the league.

I don't see Jeffrey walking the Bears have a decent amount of cap space and franchise tagging him again is not a bad idea. He has expressed interest in staying I would maybe swing a 2 year deal for decent money as a prove you can stay on the field type of deal.

Baltimore and Indianapolis are backwards. The Eagles and the Colts are doing a coin flip for 14/15, so the Colts can't be 16 and the Ravens can't be 14

@Cunningham818

I got what you wrote I'm just letting you know as a Browns fan that I don't think either pick is going to happen. Unless Garrett injures himself between now and the draft I expect he will be the Browns choice at #1 unless they get over whelmed with a trade offer. As for Williams, WR is probably the Browns least position of need as they have Coleman, Pryor, and 3 other WRs they drafted last year.
